“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, is already expected to be a critical hit. It is a moving and passionate homage to the film’s original Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, who died from colon cancer in August 2020.

As fans prepare for the sequel to this Black superhero journey that celebrates African identity, some of the film’s performers believe there’s still a striking dearth of Black representation in superhero films four years after “Black Panther” demonstrated the necessity for these sorts of characters.

After Chadwick Boseman’s death, the cast of Black Panther says we need more Black heroes.

“I realized there was no explanation for that shortcoming,” said Danai Gurira, 44, who plays Dora Milaje commander Okoye in the film. “And that has to be fixed.” And that is still my goal. It’s as though nothing has changed. That is how I still feel. I still believe we have a long way to go.”

According to studies, it is crucial for youngsters to see superheroes that look like them.

Morning Consult’s November 2021 study on Marvel and other superhero franchises and their efforts to enhance on-screen representation found that “there’s still a need for greater diversity among prominent characters in superhero films – especially from Gen Z.” According to the report, 44% of Gen Z adults, a key demographic,

To that point, the film’s characters admit that there is a new hole in the wake of Boseman’s death, which they seek to fill collectively by taking on his mantle and transforming the restricted terrain.

Lupita Nyong’o, 39, who portrays Nakia, an undercover spy for Wakanda, said she felt a strong duty to make young fans feel recognized and to introduce them to sympathetic heroines.

“These are the types of projects I wish I had when I was a kid,” she says. “And now I get to help completely transform the perceptions that tiny kids will have about what’s possible for people of color.”

And it’s very fantastic that there may come a day when children grow up unaware that they may be regarded as less desirable. As a result, I’m overjoyed.

Letitia Wright, 29, who plays Black Panther’s younger sister Shuri, said she felt an urgent duty to fill the vacuum left by Boseman, and that growing up with a Black Panther or a Shuri would have been life-changing.

“It would have probably opened up more of my creativity,” Wright added. “It would have surely… motivated me – made me dream larger.” However, it is never too late. And it’s encouraging to see that the next generation, young boys and girls, may be motivated by these films.”

However, you do not have to be a young boy or girl to be moved. Gurira, who said she never had anything like “Black Panther” growing up, said seeing it as an adult was “amazing.”

Gurira believes it is critical for Black creatives to continue pushing for change in the film business so that films like “Black Panther” may become the norm.

“When I see those little girls who are shown the Black’Little Mermaid,’ and their reaction, I’m like, not only do I feel amazing about it, but I feel optimistic,” Gurira remarked. “But I also have the feeling, ‘Oh, no, we’ve got a lot more work to do,’ because I need to get to a point where these girls aren’t surprised to see themselves.”

The 35-year-old actor, who portrayed Killmonger in the original Marvel film, walked the red carpet at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre to commemorate the release of writer/director Ryan Coogler’s long-awaited Marvel sequel.

PEOPLE’s 2020 Sexiest Man Alive stood out among a sea of eye-catching ensembles, dressed in a sleek, yellow jacket and matching wide-legged pants (both Louis Vuitton).

He completed his appearance with a white Intimissimi tank top, black sneakers, a gold chain Tiffany & Co. HardWear diamond pavé necklace, and a yellow gold Vacheron Constantin watch.

Nyong’o, who played Nakia again in the film, looked stunning in a shining white two-piece gown with flattering cut-outs along the mermaid-cut skirt. The Oscar winner, 39, accessorized her look with a crown of shells in her hair.

Bassett, 64, stole the show with a purple jewel-toned one-of-a-kind gown with layers of frills and folds. Bassett donned strappy, peep-toe heels to complement her glittering outfit as Ramonda.

Gurira, who plays Okoye in the film, was also dressed in a shiny purple ensemble. Her gown had two large ruffled sleeves and an A-line pleated skirt. The 44-year-old Walking Dead star paired her ensemble with purple heels.

Wright, 28, wore an outfit that looked to pay tribute to late Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman. The Guyanese-British actress, who reprises her role as Shuri, sported a black suit with a bedazzled harness similar to what Chadwick Boseman wore to the 2018 Academy Awards.

And Cole, who joined the franchise this year, channeled her character’s warrior past in a sequin hooded ensemble paired with a strapless dress in the same fabric. The 35-year-old accessorized with sheer black gloves and a black purse with a long rope handle and a long tassel that dragged along the train of her gown.

It’s a big claim to make that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever boasts the finest cast in the MCU, but we’re going through with it. Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta, and Dominique Thorne are putting their friendship to the test while performing in theaters throughout the world.

The cast of Wakanda Forever read out a series of questions on lesser-known information about each of their colleagues in a new promotional video published by Marvel Studios on Twitter, as they either struggled to guess the correct answer or confidently flexed their knowledge.

Thorne’s Cornell degree was known to Nyong’o, Wright, and Bassett, “because she kept talking about it on site,” Wright remarked mockingly.

Huerta’s 70 acting credentials, on the other hand, caught most of the group off guard, with even Huerta, sensibly, presuming the correct response was the actress who portrays Wakanda matriarch, Queen Ramonda.

When asked which cast member participated in the iconic British sci-fi series Doctor Who, Wright surprised Nyong’o with her poker face, prompting her to make an informed guess for another British cast member, and MCU newcomer, Michaela Coel.

Speaking of physicians, it turns out that three of them are in the Wakanda Forever cast. Honorary doctorates have been awarded to Bassett, Gurira, and Nyong’o. Bassett has five, but it was Gurira who stated it best, “don’t dislike the player!”

Bassett’s performance in Wakanda Forever is already generating a lot of Oscar talk, and she might become the first performer in a Marvel film to be nominated for the film’s most prestigious award. Huerta, Wright, and Gurira, in particular, give outstanding performances in the film, with Nyong’o, Thorne, and Duke playing supporting roles.
